Geography at Exeter is one of the largest Geography Departments in the UK and is recognised as an international leader across the range of contemporary geographical and environmental research. Exeter Geography was ranked 8th amongst UK University geography departments in the 2022 QS world rankings and 25th in the world for Geography. In the 2021 REF, Exeter Geography was ranked joint third for research environment, 9th for GPA and 7th out of 56 UK institutions for 4* ‘World Leading’ research
Human Geography at Exeter is diverse and leading-edge, with over 30 permanent academic staff. Our work is influential in shaping research agendas in fields that include geographies of health, more-than-human geographies, geographies of science and technology, cultural geographies, political, performative, and activist geographies, contemporary urbanisation, migration and refugee studies and environmental sustainability, climate change and resilience. Geographers at Exeter play leading roles in the associated Global Systems Institute, Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health and Centre for Resilience in Environment Water and Waste based at the University.
The role
We are seeking to appoint a new Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, to be based at the Exeter (Streatham) campus, who will contribute to enhancing Human Geography research and teaching at Exeter, with possible preference given to candidates that can demonstrate expertise in an area related or complementary to existing research strengths notably in health geographies and related fields. Additional experience in the teaching of contemporary methods, including GIS applications, in human geography would also be welcome.
The post holder will be expected to:
fulfil research, teaching and administration duties as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography.
build the research profile of human geography at Exeter, generating new funding, and attracting and supervising post-doctorate researchers and postgraduate research students.
develop research links and opportunities with relevant industrial, commercial, charitable, governmental and other external bodies
collaborate with colleagues both within the Department and the University of Exeter as a whole in order to develop and support human geography research and teaching, including inclusive pedagogies, within the context of the faculty and department.
contribute to the general operation of the Department and Faculty as a member of its academic team.
About you
For a Lecturer post you will have:
A PhD or equivalent in Human Geography or relevant cognate discipline and evidence of an independent, internationally recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
Depending on career-stage, a strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrable potential to attract such funding
An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
Involvement in projects which develop impact, or clear plans to develop impactful research agendas
Familiarity with the use of a range of geographical methods in human geography research and teaching (including, where appropriate, GIS).
For a Senior Lecturer you will have:
A PhD or equivalent in Human Geography or relevant cognate discipline and evidence of an independent, internationally recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
A strong record in attracting funding for research, and demonstrable potential to attract such funding
An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
Enthusiasm and experience of delivering high quality undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes
Involvement in projects which develop impact, or clear plans to develop impactful research agendas.
An active and supportive approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research that will help to foster interactions and links both within the University and externally with business and industry
Proven academic leadership skills and teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing group members
Be an externally recognised authority in your research and the broader subject area.
