Environmental Scientist Laboratory & Field Support

Water jobs: Environmental Scientist Laboratory & Field Support Employer: UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology
Job location: Edinburgh UK
Apply before: 27 Mar 2022

Summary

The ACE Science Area are involved in projects across the UK and internationally, working on the biosphere atmosphere exchange of trace gases, especially greenhouse gases (GHGs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) . Our work focuses on understanding and quantifying the interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere based on measurements, experiments and modelling of greenhouse gases, reactive air pollutants, water and energy. We quantify fluxes and transport of matter and energy, pollutant impacts on the above- and belowground biota, and how changes in ecological communities feedback on atmospheric composition. We study a wide range of habitats such as forest, grassland, wetlands, urban areas, and cropland, including bioenergy crops in the UK and in Mediterranean, arctic and tropical climate zones.

This is a technical post, focused on supporting research with well-managed laboratory facilities.

Depending on your background we will offer you training in the following areas to support you in this role:

Laboratory methods for the measurement of air samples, using gas chromatography and related techniques.
Field sampling techniques and laboratory methods for the chemical analysis of samples of vegetation, soil and water from different environments.
Carrying out physiological techniques for the measurement of gas exchange from soil and plants.
Data management, statistical analysis, report writing, and presentation of results to peers.
Skills and experience required

A degree in Chemistry, Biological or Environmental Sciences
