Program description
We are very pleased to announce that Deltares will be hosting a two day course on 'Numerical modelling of detailed free surface flows'. The course will take place on 22-23 June 2015 in Delft, The Netherlands.
This course will focus on the interaction between offshore/coastal structures and individual waves, where the waves are resolved in time, i.e. not given as a spectral property. Engineering models such as Delft3D coupled with SWAN can be used for regional/global scale, while the models covered in this course are intended for local problems, where individual waves and non-hydrostatic effects are of importance. This type of problems could for instance be the evaluation of the wave induced forces on a monopile foundation due to nonlinear waves or the wave reflection from and stability of a rubble mound breakwater.
Besides giving the participants an introduction to the usage of the cutting edge open-source numerical tools, special attention will be paid to efficiency and how to ensure that a high quality solution is obtained. This is done via lectures and relevant hands-on exercises. The tools that will be covered are the open-source and fully nonlinear potential flow solver, OceanWave3D (developed at the Technical University of Denmark) and the open-source general purpose CFD-toolbox OpenFoamĀ® coupled with waves2Foam (originally developed at the Technical university of Denmark and now maintained and expanded from within Deltares).
